Do you suffer from foot, leg, hip, or back pain due to fallen arches? Orthotics offered by your Mississauga, Whitby, and Brantford, ON, podiatrists, Dr. Barry Noble, Dr. Mark Bradley, and Dr. Marilyn Bradley of The Podiatry Associates, can ease your pain.

What are the symptoms of fallen arches?

Your arches provide support for your entire body. If they're too low, you may experience a variety of symptoms including:

  • Pain in your arch, ankle, or heel that can worsen when you're active and may flare up when walking or standing
  • Aches and pain in your legs, hip, or back
  • Swollen, sore arches. Swelling can also affect the inside of your ankle
  • Cramps in the muscles of your feet and legs
  • Abnormal gait

You may also be more likely to develop bunions, arthritis, hammertoe, and plantar fasciitis if you have fallen arches.

Low arches can be inherited or can be caused by or related to:

  • Overuse injuries
  • Weight gain
  • Foot injuries
  • Pregnancy
  • Tendon injuries
  • Diabetes
  • Foot abnormalities
  • Conditions or injuries that affect the nerves in your feet
  • Marfan syndrome
  • Foot fracture

Your risk of fallen arches also increases with age.

What to do about fallen arch pain

Your doctor may recommend:

  • Orthotics in Mississauga, Whitby, and Brantford, ON: These prescription shoe inserts support, align, and cushion your feet. When your arches are properly supported, foot, ankle, leg, hip, or back pain will lessen or stop.
  • Pain Relief Measures: Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication or ice decrease swelling and pain due to fallen arches. If these measures don't help, steroid injections may keep your pain under control.
  • Physical Therapy: During physical therapy, you'll perform exercises that stretch and strengthen the muscles in your feet.
  • Braces: Braces support your arches and prevent your feet from rolling inward when you walk.
